Generally, before buying a television a person consider only two things, how big it is and how much does it cost. That seems appropriate idea but what if I told you that, you are wrong. There are other important things you should consider if you want a quality performance.
Let’s talk about the thing to be considered before buying a television:
Display types:
Plasma TV:
Actually, the production of plasma television has been stopped. In November 2014, Samsung officially stopped the production of the plasma television. So, it would better if we focus on other types. Still, if you want to know how plasma tv works, here’s the link.
LCD TV:
Simply, the LCD stands for Liquid Crystals Display. They are very cheap and energy efficient and have really good colors. But, sometimes you have to compromise viewing angles and if you consider buying LCD tv for intense gaming, it would be better to consider other display options.
LED TV:
LED television is same as LCD but they use LEDs as a backlight for liquid crystals in the display. They are the little bit costly and consume very less power compare to LCDs. If a TV has local dimming, it will create advantages, as blacks appear deeper and darker on those parts of the screen, which can be a big bonus for people who watch the video with darker scenes, like movies and TV shows.
OLED TV:
Organic Light Emitting Diode is LED in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound that emits light in response to an electric current. If you feel difficulty in understanding technical terms, just keep in mind that OLED is the latest version of the display. This display consumes very much less power and the cost is quite high. So, if you have money, OLED display is highly recommended.
Refresh Rate:
The number of times that an image on the screen is refreshed is called refresh rate. The refresh rate simply measured in hertz, you have probably heard about 60Hz, 120Hz, and 140Hz. The refresh rate makes the video more smooth and clear. If you are watching action movies or playing games, it can make a huge difference. But sometimes the frame rate of the video does not match, you can change the settings.
Input Lag:
This is particularly important for the gamers. Input lag is the time gap between an input going into the TV and the TV creating the image. The greater the lag, the further behind the screen is from what’s actually happening in the game.
Inputs:
Another very important feature to consider is how many and what kinds of inputs are there on television. Always look for minimum 4 HDMI ports, 4 USB ports 3.0 if available, ethernet port at least . Other ports like analog tv connection, A/V connection are a basic connection, you don’t have to worry about them.
Ratios:
The contrast ratio is simply the difference in brightness between the darkest black and whitest white the TV can produce. With a low contrast ratio, black areas of an image might appear more like a washed-out gray, or bright areas may lack vibrancy. You’ll often see numbers like 2,000:1 or 5,000:1 to indicate the contrast ratio, and the bigger that ratio, the better — in theory.
Another ratio is aspect ratio, actually, this ratio is simply the ratio of a television’s width to its height. It has no particular effect on the picture quality. You’ll likely find a lot of 16:9, and that will probably be good enough, but if you want to watch a lot of modern, widescreen Hollywood movies, you may look around for 2.4:1.
Smart Television:
Wait, what’s smart television? As the smartphone, a television with a function like a smartphone is smart television. Smart television can connect to the internet, stream live video, use social media, etc. through application inbuilt or from the third party.
Screen Resolution:
Screen resolution also matters in the picture quality. Normally, Full HD means 1080p vertical and 1920p horizontal that are most common resolution found in the market. 4K resolution is the latest starting trend but it’s expensive. Higher the resolution, clearer will be the picture.
Brand:
There are lots of brand of television floating around. The higher the brand image is higher the price will be. The branded television are considered to be durable and good, but it not always the same. Choosing the brand is up to you.
So, if you are going to buy a new television and want a good picture quality, want to connect accessories, consider the above mentioned points.
