Have you ever thought about switching the mobile network without changing the number, probably yes? There were days when NTC’s network was very poor and NCell’s network was pretty good. Everybody wanted the NTC’s number but NCell’s network. Though, that was not possible in those days. Nevertheless, the Nepal Telecom Authority is planning to bring the Mobile Number Portability technology within 3 months. The director of NTA, Purusottam Khanal said “The NTA will bring Mobile Number Portability technology within 3 months and we are still studying and consulting with the providers”
Mobile number portability (MNP) enables mobile telephone users to retain their mobile telephone numbers when changing from one mobile network carrier to another.
This system will encourage the competition among the service providers, resulting in a clean and smooth network to the consumer. However, the service providers do not seem interested in such technology. These companies have not managed their network systems. Still, the Nepal Telecom Authority is trying to convince the service provider. If needed the NTA can put pressure on these companies to manage their system quickly.
It seems this process will take much more time than NTA is expecting. Still, if the NTA bring MNP system in the country, it will be a huge benefit for the consumers. However, NTA announced that it will introduce such system six years ago.
Some benefits of MNP are listed below:
- You can shift your old mobile service provider to new better mobile service portability, keeping your mobile number unchanged. Thus, you need not inform your friends and relatives about any change in your number. This is of great benefit to businessmen and professionals where they may have to suffer losses due to change in mobile number.

- New mobile service providers will have to do efforts to establish their feet in the market. They can shine their self just by offering attractive tariff plans with quality service to their customers.
- Value added services at high speed may also be offered to the new customers.
