You have probably heard that internet protocol television (IPTV) is a big thing in the television industry and it is. Though IPTV was first launched in 1995, only after c20 years of launch it has arrived in Nepal. But, what actually is it and how does it work!
It essentially is a technology that delivers video or TV broadcasts over the Internet. Instead of receiving television or video over the broadcast waves, cable lines or through a satellite TV service, your TV is hooked directly into a broadband Internet router and receives the digital signal directly over the Internet.
There are many advantages of IPTV upon current analog cable television.
Integration
Integration can be a great way for many companies to offer several services in one integrated package. For instance, IPTV can also be packaged with normal broadband Internet as well as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). All these services can be over one line sent directly to the consumer. That means it reduces the cost and the consumer has to deal with only a single company.
Switched IP
Cable TV broadcaster and satellite TV broadcaster generally send all television signal at one time and then the consumer chooses which signal to show. Because all the signal is sent at once, lots of bandwidths are used unnecessarily. With switched IP, all TV data are held in a center location and only the channel that the customer at home chooses in piped in, this means better quality on the screen.
Interactivity
IPTV can offer lots of features and interactive facilities than normal cable and satellite TV system. You can directly purchase from television, order pizza, book movie ticket, and interactive games for children, etc. This is also vey mobile, that means with single subscription you can watch television on your smart television, smartphone, tablets and laptops also.
Video on demand
VOD is an interactive feature that allows you to request programs such as movies, TV shows, etc. at your ease. For example: if you want to watch a movie which was broadcasted on HBO years ago, you can still watch that movie.
Better compression
IPTV produces a great picture and plenty of programming options such as interactivity, networking, integration, etc; however, it can also deliver better images due to its compression. IPTV uses an improved standard of compression than the current digital television standard (FTA). This means that not only are file sizes being sent to your TV set smaller in size, the quality of the TV image is higher.
Now let’s talk about the disadvantage of IPTV, the main backdrop of this system is packet loss. That means IPTV uses the same technology that other types of data use to send and receive information (Internet Protocol). Due to this fact, your TV may experience from time to time a pack loss or delays. Your experience can be significantly worse if your IPTV connection is not up to par or not quick enough.
