Nepal is in process of ‘digitization’, replacing the current analog cable network with a digital system. The UN’s International Telecommunication Union (ITU) has set 2017 as the deadline for countries to go digital. This makes digitization mandatory by the year of the year 2017. Though the government has been working since 2012 on this, but still must of the household are using the analog connection. Keeping in mind of this mandatory transition to digital system rule, must of the cable network are upgrading to the digital system. But this is mainly focused on cities especially Kathmandu. Cable connection is not feasible for most of the parts of the country. For the digital system to reach every nook and corner of the country DTH (Direct to Home) is the easier option.
Dish Home is an only DTH provider in the country. But there are illegal Indian DTH connections in the border areas and some hilly areas. Seeing this there is still room for new DTH provider, which will end the monopoly in the market and more competition means more facilities to the customers. That is why a new DTH network provider is going to launch soon.
Nepal Digital Cable is going to launch HamroTV is in Nepal by the end of the February. The new platform will broadcast over 170 including 50 High Definition (HD) TV channels of local and international content. Audiences will be able to enjoy an array of high-quality programming. With this, the company has promised 3 Ultra High Definition (4K or UHD) channels and the internet.
“NDC is providing a groundbreaking option from a dominated marketplace,” said Laxmi Prasad Paudyal, Managing Director of NDC. “We are thrilled to work with ABS to deliver the next-generation DTH service in Nepal, with the most sophisticated and state-of-the-art technology. Our subscribers will enjoy more than 170 high-quality channels, including around 50 High Definition (HD), as well as 3 Ultra High Definition (UHD or 4K) channels, the first in Nepal. Customers can also look forward to a very attractive package from NDC.” He added, “Our goal is not to meet the competition but go way beyond it and set a new milestone in Nepalese Pay TV Industry”.
